What exactly is carpentry?

Carpentry can be defined as the skill of working with timber to maintain and/or build furniture, buildings, and other objects. We tend to think of the word, 'carpet' and think carpenters just lay down carpet. Well, we were all wrong! There are different categories of carpentry as well: rough carpentry, finish carpentry, form-work carpentry, cabinetmaking, trim, joister, scenic, green, ship's carpentry and more. Some people enter carpentry as a trade for life, while others might do it as a hobby.  Much like a guild, lots of people apprentice as carpenters before going out on their own. Usually these apprenticeships are three to four years long, but a combination of former work experience and college or industry courses can aid in the time process. Then there are families like us who pass the trade down from generation to generation.

Carpentry History Facts

  • The first recorded sign of carpentry in the world dates back to 4,000 B.C. in the stone age.
  • The first tools of the trade were stone, but the Egyptians leveled them up to ones of copper for furniture building. They were the first to create veneering (gluing thin slices of wood together) and finishing (adding a protective sealant to wood to preserve it longer)
  • Ancient China fine tuned the craft by using precise measurements in their craftsmanship.
  • Vikings were known as excellent wood craftsmen, building ships that made the Norse the naval powerhouses they are known for today.
  • During Charlemagne's reform, late-8th century to the 9th century, which put focus on architecture and culture, carpentry expanded.
  • The first churches and castles of Northern Europe were not stone, but built by carpenters from wood.
  • By the 16th century, sawmills speckled the landscape, forming the timber industry with them.
  • The Industrial Revolution sped things up, freeing carpenters from relying on handmade nails which were labor-intensive.
  • By the 19th century, carpenters had been long making framed post-and-beam buildings, new increasingly popular materials were found:  steel and concrete.
  • Carpentry and timber construction have had a resurgence recently, as sustainability has become an economic interest of consumers and products such as glulam and laminated veneer lumber have been introduced.

The trade of carpentry and its offshoots are still vital to our world today, but were also instrumental in building the infrastructures of the world and cultures around us today. Even with our technological evolution, carpentry and woodwork are still as popular and essential as ever.
